History leading up to the public displays
The Crofton Art Group members work continuously throughout the year developing artwork for themselves, and for the group's Spring and Fall shows. Aside from displaying our artwork at the two shows, we also display at other locations year round.
The first place we started hanging paintings was at the local Municipal Office, and the group actually received $36 for a six month rental. We have also been invited to hang artwork in the MLA's office at times. Then for awhile we started to hang work in the Chemainus Credit Union, the Chemainus Senior's Centre, and even our local coffee shop / cafe "Litto's". We also display some paintings at the Crofton Community Centre, and in the Crofton Senior's Centre. Our big displays however are located at local care facilities.
In 2008, Sunridge Place Seniors Community in Duncan opened up, and our art group President at that time (Molly Ann Baker) saw so many bare walls there. She asked the facility staff if they would like some paintings to adorn the walls. They agreed to the idea, and now the Crofton Art Group has approximately 60 paintings hanging on the two floors. The paintings are changed out about every six months. In 2016 we added the Lodge on Fourth Street in Ladysmith, but that was discontinued when the COVID pandemic hit. In 2017 we started displaying at Cerwydden Seniors Community in Duncan, where their two floors are now covered with our paintings as well. They are also changed out on a regular basis.
Displaying our paintings in the local care facilities has been well received by the staff, and especially by the residents. There is a new art gallery everyday it seems to them, and the topic of the paintings often brings memories forward and gives them joy. As artists, it gives us joy knowing that our creations are appreciated. We still have more paintings looking for more walls!
