Toni moved to Northern Alberta from England in the 60's, gradually moving further south until she found her 'home' in Fort Saint James. Teaching in small isolated schools she found that text books had little relevance for her students. Starting with simple readers she wrote and illustrated many beginning reading books. Most of these small books were completely hand made. For some time, she worked with the Yinka Dene Language Institute creating texts for the Carrier Immersion Kindergarten. She eventually found that the art was more relaxing than writing the texts. A visiting probation officer purchased paper and brushes and during brief visits encouraged her to paint more freely just for enjoyment. She enlivened the long winters by painting very large flowers which she pinned to her walls with thumb tacks.
On retirement she planned to take courses in painting using acrylics rather than school Tempura paints or felt tip pens. However she still feels a little anxious unless she writes a short story or poem to accompany the painting.
