What is plein air?
"Plein air painting is the practice of creating art outdoors, directly from nature, rather than in a studio. It's a French term meaning "in the open air" and emphasizes capturing the natural light, colors, and atmosphere of a scene. This method encourages artists to work quickly, adapt to changing conditions, and develop a unique observational style. "
The Crofton Art Group members participate in plein air sessions during the summer break months of July and August. The group decides on the dates and locations ahead of time, and usually gather from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. The plein air sessions are generally held at different locations every second Wednesday, with group sessions down at the Crofton Seawalk on the Wednesdays in between.
The members bring along whatever equipment and materials they feel they will need, and after setting up dive right into their work. The different locations enable the artists to take in new subject matter. In the past, locations have included Askew Park in Chemainus, Bright Angel Regional Park in Duncan, Centennial Park in Duncan, and even properties of some of the artists themselves. Members bring along their own lunch, or take in local eateries near the location, making it a great social time as well. In the summer of 2025 we have had plein air sessions at Hecate Park in Cowichan Bay, Kinsmen Beach Park in Chemainus, the Crow & Gate Pub in Cedar, the Genoa Bay Marina in Genoa Bay, as well as the Crofton Seawalk.
